The drop e rule states that when a word ends in silent e and you add a vowel suffix, you drop the e. For example, if you have the word bake and add the suffixes -ed, -er, and -ing, you wind up with baked, baker, and baking.

Rule 1: For words that end in a silent (not pronounced) -e, drop the -e and add -ing. Rule 2: For one-syllable words that end in consonant-vowel-consonant (except x and w), double the last letter and add -ing. Rule 3: For most other words (including words that end in -y), add -ing with no changes.

The rule for dropping the '-e' at the end of a word is to do it when adding a suffix beginning with a vowel. So, for example, the word 'hope' plus the suffix '-ed' demands dropping the 'e' at the end of 'hope' (making the past tense 'hoped' rather than 'hopeed').

The Silent E Rule in Spelling The silent-e rule is as such: When “e” is the last letter in a word and the preceding syllable has just one vowel, the first vowel is usually long and the “e” is silent.

When adding ing to words that end with a single e, DROP the e. When adding ing to words that end with a double e, DON'T drop the e. When adding ly to words that end with e, KEEP the e.

If the base word ends in a silent e, drop the e before adding the suffix (the silent e rule). For example, when the vowel suffix -ing is added to the word make, the silent e is dropped and the word becomes making (make + ing = making).
