The STAAR tests taken in 11th grade are called Exit Level STAAR. Students must pass the Exit Level STAAR in English language arts, math, science, and social studies in order to graduate. Students who do not pass the eleventh grade Exit Level STAAR have multiple chances to retake the test(s).

The student will demonstrate an understanding of components, cycles, patterns, and natural events of Earth and space systems. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the structures and functions of living organisms and their interdependence on each other and with their environment.

8.3A: Analyze, evaluate, and critique scientific explanations by using empirical evidence, logical reasoning, and experimental and observational testing, so as to encourage critical thinking by the student.

Students in California will focus on studying physical science during 8th grade. The major scientific subjects discussed in this grade include: Matter and how it functions. Motion, forces and interactions.

8th Grade. 8th graders will learn about atoms, protons, the Periodic Table, chemical formulas, reactions and equations. They'll study speed, velocity, acceleration, Newton's Law of inertia and the movement of the Earth and Moon.

Grade 8—Natural sciences are taught as separate subjects: biology, chemistry, and physics.

TEK 8.5A: Describe the structure of atoms, including the masses, electrical charges, and locations, of protons and neutrons in the nucleus and electrons in the electron cloud.

(1) In Grade 8, students study the history of the United States from the early colonial period through Reconstruction. The knowledge and skills in subsection (b) of this section comprise the first part of a two-year study of U.S. history.

In the 8th grade, science instruction focuses on the physical sciences. Students are taught about the structure of matter, and become familiar with the periodic table of elements.
