The International Electrotechnical Commission and its national counterparts (IET, IEEE, VDE, etc.) define high voltage as above 1000 V for alternating current, and at least 1500 V for direct current.

The circuit breaker shall be rated at one or more of the following maximum voltages: 635 V, 508 V, or 254 V. For fused circuit breakers, the 635 V rated maximum voltage becomes 600 V to match the fuse rating. The rated frequency of a circuit breaker is the frequency at which it is designed to perform.

A medium voltage switchgear is a set of electrical equipment enclosed in a predominantly metal structure. This centralized set includes a variety of switches, transformers, fuses and circuit breakers. Electrical panels are used to better protect, control and separate electrical equipment from each other.

Extra low voltage (ELV) means voltage of 50V or less (AC RMS), or 120V or less (ripple-free DC). Low voltage (LV) means voltage greater than ELV, but not more than 1000V (AC RMS) or 1500V (ripple-free DC). High voltage (HV) means voltage greater than low voltage.

ANSI and IEEE standards define voltage classifications as follows: Low-voltage: up to 600V. Medium-voltage: between 600V and 69 kV. High-voltage: between 69 kV and 230 kV.

Low Voltage − From 120 V to 600 V. Medium Voltage − From 2.4 kV to 34.5 kV. High Voltage − From 46 kV to 230 kV. Extra-High Voltage − From 345 kV to 1100 kV.
