Skeletal connective tissue is a type of connective tissue which is composed of solid matrix and cells. It consists of bone, cartilage, tendons and ligaments. The main function of it is to provide support and protect the soft part of the body. It also gives shape and form to the body.

The human skeleton is an endoskeleton that is composed of the axial and appendicular skeleton. The axial skeleton is composed of the bones of the skull, ossicles of the ear, hyoid bone, vertebral column, and ribcage. The skull consists of eight cranial bones and 14 facial bones.

It develops mostly from the mesenchyme, derived from the mesoderm, the middle embryonic germ layer. Connective tissue is found in between other tissues everywhere in the body, including the nervous system. The three meninges, membranes that envelop the brain and spinal cord, are composed of connective tissue.

When looking at the skeletal system, the bone tissue makes up most of the skeletal system. The cells within this tissue are designed to thicken or take away bone tissue. The other types of connective tissue within the skeletal system are cartilage, ligaments, and tendons.

Skeletal materials are organics primarily composed of varying percentages of hydroxyapatite and collagen, and can take the form of bone, antler, ivory, teeth, or horn. To first identify whether a material is skeletal, one must look for a porous surface, or unique shape.

Two major forms of supportive connective tissue, cartilage and bone, allow the body to maintain its posture and protect internal organs.

Bone is a specialized connective tissue consisting of cells, fibers and ground substance. Unlike other connective tissues, its extracellular components are mineralized giving it substantial strength and rigidity.

Tissue that gives strength and structure to bones. Bone is made up of compact tissue (the hard, outer layer) and cancellous tissue (the spongy, inner layer that contains red marrow). Bone tissue is maintained by bone-forming cells called osteoblasts and cells that break down bone called osteoclasts.
