All electromagnetic radiation is light, but we can only see a small portion of this radiation—the portion we call visible light. Cone-shaped cells in our eyes act as receivers tuned to the wavelengths in this narrow band of the spectrum.

In fact visible 'light' is a form of radiation, which can be defined as an energy that travels in the form of electromagnetic waves. It can also be described as a flow of particle-like 'wave-packets', called photons, that travel constantly at the speed of light (about 300 000 kilometres per second).

Light is always produced by excited electrons dropping back to a lower energy state and releasing photons. The excitation of the electrons can be caused by other electromagnetic waves or electric currents or heat (ie. collisions with other particles).

What is a Visible Light? Visible light has around 400 nm to 700 nm and a frequency range of around 400 THz to 800 THz. This part of the electromagnetic spectrum can be “seen” and distinguished optically by the human eye.

Visible light waves are the only wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can see. The different wavelengths of visible light are seen as the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

Most of the visible light on Earth comes from the sun. The sun produces light because it is so hot. Glowing with visible light because of a high temperature is called incandescence. Producing light without a high temperature is called luminescence.

Charged particles—such as electrons and protons—create electromagnetic fields when they move, and these fields transport the type of energy we call electromagnetic radiation, or light.

Visible light falls in the range of the EM spectrum between infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV). It has frequencies of about 4 × 1014 to 8 × 1014 cycles per second, or hertz (Hz) and wavelengths of about 740 nanometers (nm) or 2.9 × 10−5 inches, to 380 nm (1.5 × 10−5 inches).
