How to fill out the Nccpc online

The Non-communicating Children’s Pain Checklist – Revised (NCCPC-R) is a valuable tool for assessing pain in children who are unable to verbalize their discomfort. This guide will walk you through the process of completing the NCCPC online, ensuring you understand each component and can submit your observations effectively.

  2. Fill in the child's name and unit/file number in the designated spaces at the top of the form.
  3. Enter the date of today's observation in the format dd/mm/yy.
  4. Provide your name in the 'observer' field, ensuring that it clearly identifies you.
  5. Record the start and stop times of your observation, making sure to specify AM or PM.
  6. Assess the child's behaviors over the past two hours, referring to each item listed under the Vocal, Social, Facial, Activity, Physiological, and Eating/Sleeping categories. 7. Calculate the scores for each category and record them in the score summary section at the bottom of the form.
  8. Add the scores across all categories to get the total score and check it against the provided cut-off scores to determine pain presence.

An accurate assessment of pain can be affected by a number of factors, including a child's age, gender, level of understanding and previous pain experiences. Cultural and family norms also influence the degree to which your child may experience and express their pain.

Each category (Face, Legs etc) is scored on a 0-2 scale, which results in a total pain score between 0 and 10. The person assessing the child should observe them briefly and then score each category ing to the description supplied.

The revised FLACC (r-FLACC) scale is an observational pain measure based on the FLACC scale that has been amended to include additional pain behaviors often found in children who are non-verbal or with cognitive impairment.

The NCCPC-PV is a 27-item scale (range 0 to 81) and uses a Likert-like format “0-not at all,” “1-just a little,” “2-fairly often,” or “3-very often” during 10-minute observation. A prior study of the NCCPC-PV indicated moderate pain is a level at which most children would require pain medication.

Accurate pain measurements in children are difficult to achieve. Three main methods are currently used to measure pain intensity: self report, behavioral, and physiological measures.

The NCCPC-R was designed to be used for children, aged 3 to 18 years, who are unable to speak because of cognitive (mental/intellectual) impairments or disabilities. It can be used whether or not a child has physical impairments or disabilities.
