Finnish citizenship can be acquired by birth, on the basis of the parents' citizenship, by application, or by declaration. Citizens may only be released from Finnish citizenship if they are citizens, or acquire the citizenship, of a foreign country.

These include maternity allowance, paternity allowance, parental allowance and also special maternity allowance, which is paid if you have to stop working because of risks at work. To get allowances, you must be covered by health insurance in Finland for 180 days immediately before the child's birth.

Having a baby in a foreign country does not automatically mean your baby is a citizen of that country, even though that country will most likely issue a birth certificate. Only the United States, Canada and most South American countries have what is known as 'birthright citizenship'.

If your child is born in Finland, you must submit a residence permit application for the child within three months from the birth. It is necessary to apply for a residence permit even if you have applied for Finnish citizenship for the child. Otherwise, your child does not have the right to reside in Finland.

If you are not able to apply online, please fill in the form Application for a residence permit to settle in Sweden – for a child under the age of 18, 163011. The application must be submitted to the Swedish embassy or consulate-general in the country where the child is living.
