Speciation, that is, the evolution of reproductive barriers eventually leading to complete isolation, is a crucial process generating biodiversity. Recent work has contributed much to our understanding of how reproductive barriers begin to evolve, and how they are maintained in the face of gene flow.

This separation eventually results in two distinct species. Here, the only example of allopatric speciation is that regarding the squirrels separated by the river. The example with the hawks refers to sympatric speciation, where no geographical barrier exists, but speciation can still occur due to other stressors.

How is sympatric speciation supposed to occur? The most common scenarios involve disruptive selection, that is, natural selection driving a population in two different directions at once. A population of herbivorous insects, for example, may be selected to use two very different types of plant growing in a single area.

The apple maggot fly is thought to have evolved through sympatric speciation from its ancestor, the North American maggot fly. This example of sympatric speciation occurred through habitat differentiation: apple maggot flies began to prefer apple trees as host plants, whereas their ancestors used hawthorn trees.

There are five types of speciation: allopatric, peripatric, parapatric, and sympatric and artificial. Allopatric speciation (1) occurs when a species separates into two separate groups which are isolated from one another.

Answer. Variation in evolution usually refers to variation of genes at a particular loci. This differs from diversity which is the total of genetic differences within a population. Speciation is the reproductive isolation of a subset of a population.

One classic example of sympatric speciation is the emergence of the North American apple maggot fly. This insect is also known as the hawthorn maggot fly and both share the same taxonomic name. The hawthorn maggot fly is the ancestral species, which only feeds on and lays eggs upon hawthorn fruit.

Evolution occurs due to mutation, gene flow, genetic drift, natural selection etc. Speciation is the differentiation of one or more species from a set of organisms due to environmental or geographic reproduction barriers. It is a part of evolution.

1: Allopatric speciation due to geographic separation: The northern spotted owl and the Mexican spotted owl inhabit geographically separate locations with different climates and ecosystems.

Speciation is how a new kind of plant or animal species is created. Speciation occurs when a group within a species separates from other members of its species and develops its own unique characteristics.
