Copernicus had hesitated for years to publish his theory, not because he feared he had contradicted Catholic dogma (though De Revolutionibus was on the Vatican's Index of Forbidden Works from 1616 until 1835), but rather because he thought, even after working on it for three decades, that his theory was still ...

Copernicus' observations of the heavens were made with the naked eye. He died more than fifty years before Galileo became the first person to study the skies with a telescope. From his observations, Copernicus concluded that every planet, including Earth, revolved around the Sun.

Nicolaus Copernicus proposed the heliocentric model in his work published in 1543, ing to NASA Earth Observatory (opens in new tab). While the theory of the sun being central was correct, the model in its entirety held many inaccuracies.

Ptolemy (85-165 AD) attempted to solve the retrograde motion by suggesting the idea of epicycles. He imagined a small circle (the epicycle) rotating on a large circle (the deferent). The planet was fixed to the epicycle.

In the 1500s, Copernicus explained retrograde motion with a far more simple, heliocentric theory that was largely correct. Retrograde motion was simply a perspective effect caused when Earth passes a slower moving outer planet that makes the planet appear to be moving backwards relative to the background stars.

Ptolemy. To help deal with the problem of retrograde motion, a new layer of complexity was introduced. The planets would not move simply in a circle but they would rotate on a circle, which in turn, rotated around the sun. The smaller circle is the epicycle and the larger circle is the deferent.

This retrograde motion was a great puzzle to ancient astronomers. Copernicus gave the correct explanation: all planets, including the Earth, move around the Sun in the same direction; retrograde motion is an illusion created when we observe other planets from the moving planet Earth.

In the 1500s, Copernicus explained retrograde motion with a far more simple, heliocentric theory that was largely correct.
