The Paleozoic Era began with the Cambrian explosion. It ended with the Permian extinction. During the era, invertebrate animals diversified in the oceans. Plants, amphibians, and reptiles also moved to the land.

Articulate brachiopods and one lineage of crinoids survived, but never again dominated the marine environment.

Causes of this extinction event remain unclear, but they may be related to the changing climate and exceptionally low sea levels of the time. Although of lesser magnitude, other important Paleozoic mass extinctions occurred at the end of the Ordovician Period and during the late Devonian Period.

New research shows the "Great Dying" was caused by global warming that left ocean animals unable to breathe. The largest extinction in Earth's history marked the end of the Permian period, some 252 million years ago.

By the end of the Paleozoic, cycads, glossopterids, primitive conifers, and ferns were spreading across the landscape. The Permian extinction, 251.4 million years ago, devastated the marine biota: tabulate and rugose corals, blastoid echinoderms, graptolites, the trilobites, and most crinoids died out.

Permian Extinction Between the Paleozoic Era and the Mesozoic Era was the largest mass extinction known. At the end of the Permian, nearly 95% of all marine species died off. In addition, 70% of land species became extinct.
