A Certified Lay Servant (Paragraph 266) is a professing member of a local church or recognized UMC ministry, who desires to serve the church and is committed to scripture and the UMC, and has received specialized training to be a more effective disciple.

A candidate must be a professing member of a local church or other recognized entity, having completed the Basic Course (Introduction to Lay Ministries) and United Methodist Heritage, have the recommendation of their local pastor and charge/church conference or church council.

So there you have it: Lay Servant (both local and certified) – the same program with a new name, for laity interested in serving and leading in most any way. And Lay Speaker – the old name, but really a more rigorous program specifically for laity who preach.

Technically, a lay speaker is a “member of a local church … who is ready … to serve the Church.” Generally, lay speakers are leaders in the United Methodist Church on local, district, and conference levels. Lay speakers often lead worship services when a minister is not available.

A lay speaker is a professing member of a local church who is ready and desirous to serve the Church, and who is well informed on and committed to the Scriptures and the doctrine, heritage, organization, and life of The United Methodist Church.

Lay Servants are to serve the local church or charge in any way in which their witness or leadership and service inspires the laity to deeper commitment to Christ and more effective discipleship. This includes the interpretation of scriptures, doctrine, organization, and ministries of the church.

A lay speaker is a certified lay servant who has received additional training in order to serve as pulpit supply in local churches across the conference. Lay speakers serve by preaching the Word when requested by the pastor, district superintendent, or committee on Lay Servant Ministries.

Certified Lay Speaker – is a Certified Lay Servant who has completed the requirements for this certification, including the successful completion of six required advanced lay servant courses. Annual reporting is required (see form below).
