1902: Youth clubs are formed Graham started a youth program in Clark County, Ohio, in 1902, which is considered the birth of 4‑H in the United States. The first club was called “The Tomato Club” or the “Corn Growing Club”.

Membership to the 4-H club program begins when a child is enrolled in 3rd grade and is at least 8 as of January 1 of the current year. Any youth age 9 or above is eligible for project membership, regardless of grade level. Ohio 4-H membership ends December 31 of the year in which an individual attains the age of 19.

4-H programs engage New York City youth in projects and activities that help build skills in engineering, math, literacy, nutrition, health, STEM, civic engagement and leadership.

There are 4-H organizations in over 50 countries; the organization and administration varies from country to country.

The 4-H Motto: "To Make the Best Better" The member will then strive to improve the next time so his or her initial "Best" becomes "Better". The 4-H motto encourages members to stretch their abilities and capacities to reach greater achievement within their own potential.
