Regular verbs are those verbs whose past tense and past participle (2nd and 3rd forms) are formed by adding “d” or “ed” to the end of the verb.

Examples of sentences using regular verbs in the past tense Last night I played my guitar loudly and the neighbors complained. She kissed me on the cheek. It rained yesterday. Angela watched TV all night. John wanted to go to the museum.

Rule #3. If a verb ends in vowel + -y, add -ed.* play → played. stay → stayed.

Past Tense Rule 3 | Add -ied If a verb ends in a consonant followed by the letter 'y', then to change into a past tense verb, take off the 'y' and add –ied. For example, the word 'cry' ends in a consonant (r) followed by 'y'. So, cry becomes cried. Here are some examples of common past tense verbs that end in y.

Regular past simple forms are formed by adding -ed to the infinitive of the verb. That seems easy! Yes, but there are some spelling rules. If a verb ends in -e, you add -d.

The third form (v3) is the past participle form. It is used with the helper, or auxiliary, verb have (has and had are other forms). The past participle form, too, is often irregular.

Typically, you would form the past tense as follows: Take the root form of the verb (the one you will find in our amazing dictionary) and add –ed to the end. If the verb ends in -e, you would just add a -d. For example, the simple past tense of look is looked, and the simple past tense of ignite is ignited.
