The Firefighter Type 2 serves on a hand crew, engine crew, or helitack crew, performing fire suppression and fuels management duties in the most adverse climate, fuel, and terrain conditions.

Be at least 18 years of age and a high school graduate, or possess a GED equivalent. Possess a valid Michigan driver's license. Complete the on-line volunteer firefighter application form. Submit to a background check.

The full-time program, called the Basic Fire Academy, is an eleven week training program that is offered twice a year. Instruction is held Monday through Friday for eight hours per day.

(a) Be a member, or have been a member, of an organized Michigan fire department within the last 5 years immediately prior to his or her application. (b) Possess a fire fighter I certification or successfully completed the previous phases I and II to instruct subjects within the fire fighter I course.

Must be a citizen of the United States. No felony convictions. successfully become Firefighter I and Firefighter II certified after appointment to the position.

Most fire departments perform motor vehicle record checks on prospective firefighters. If an applicant has too many traffic violations and traffic convictions on their driving record, they will likely be denied employment.

Felons are also prohibited from carrying a concealed weapon, no matter the type or size. They are also unable to obtain a Michigan liquor or gaming license. As such, felons cannot own any business that sells or serves alcohol or permits gambling.

If you want to join the Army with a felony on your record, you are going to need a moral conduct waiver. The Army's “Moral Conduct Waivers” (also known as “Felony Waivers”) are not automatic. You must apply for a moral conduct waiver and doing so can take time.
