Hippocrates is credited with naming "cancer" as "karkinoma" (carcinoma) because a tumor looked like a "crab" ("karkinoma" is Greek for "crab") in that there is a central body to a tumor and the tumor extension appeared as the legs of the "crab".

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) block chemical messengers (enzymes) called tyrosine kinases. Tyrosine kinases help to send growth signals in cells, so blocking them stops the cell growing and dividing. Cancer growth blockers can block one type of tyrosine kinase or more than one type.

Hippocrates used the terms karkinos and karkinoma to describe tumours. In Greek, these words refer to a crab, most likely applied to the disease because the finger-like spread of a cancerous tumour resembles a crab with its many legs.

The description was names after the crab because the finger-like spreading projections from a cancer called to mind the shape of a crab. Later Roman physician, Celsus (28-50 BC) translated the Greek term into cancer, the Latin word for crab.

Dr. MARKEL: About 47 A.D., however, the Greco-Roman philosopher Celsus -he was not a doctor, but he wrote a very important encyclopedia of medicine - he named it cancer, because that's the Latin equivalent of crab and so the word remains to this day.

Most cancer-causing DNA changes occur in sections of DNA called genes. These changes are also called genetic changes. A DNA change can cause genes involved in normal cell growth to become oncogenes. Unlike normal genes, oncogenes cannot be turned off, so they cause uncontrolled cell growth.

Four main types of cancer are: Carcinomas. A carcinoma begins in the skin or the tissue that covers the surface of internal organs and glands. ... Sarcomas. A sarcoma begins in the tissues that support and connect the body. ... Leukemias. Leukemia is a cancer of the blood. ... Lymphomas.

Hippocrates believed that the body had 4 humors (body fluids): blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. When the humors were balanced, a person was healthy. The belief was that too much or too little of any of the humors caused disease. An excess of black bile in various body sites was thought to cause cancer.
