A detailed written order (“DWO”) must be obtained prior to billing a claim to Medicare. A DWO must contain the following: name of the beneficiary; date of the order; and a description of the items (by HCPCS code narrative or brand name/model number).

Part B covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services. covers some diabetic test supplies, including blood glucose (blood sugar) test strips, as durable medical equipment (DME).

Part B covers home blood sugar (glucose) monitors and supplies you use with the equipment, including blood sugar test strips, lancet devices, and lancets. There may be limits on how much or how often you get these supplies.

Medicare will pay for up to 300 test strips and 300 lancets every month when you use to manage your diabetes. If you don't use to control your diabetes, you may still be able to qualify for 100 test strips per month. If you test your blood sugar more frequently, you may be able to get more test strips.
