Overview: I've always said that Communication is one of the hardest merit badges for most Scouts to complete. While many badges require you to mainly memorize knowledge, Communication will have you presenting, interviewing, and writing content to complete 7 out of 9 of its requirements!

4. Read a nonfiction book or magazine that teaches you how to do something like cooking, wood-building projects, video game design, science experiments, knot-tying, etc. With your counselor's and parent's permission, complete a project from the book. Share your experience with your merit badge counselor.

Many of these badges, like Archery, First Aid and Swimming, are still offered today. But the Invention merit badge never seemed to find popularity. No Scouts earned the badge in 1911 or 1912. One Scout earned it in 1913, eight in 1914 and one more in 1915.

Requirements for the Dog Care merit badge: Explain the importance of house-training, obedience training, and socialization training for your dog. Explain what "responsible pet ownership" means. Explain what issues (including temperament) must be considered when deciding on what breed of dog to get as a family pet.

Reading is the foundation to education and learning. Show your love for books by earning the Reading Merit Badge. Merit badges are awarded to Scouts who complete the requirements for each badge.

Requirements for the Reading merit badge: Identify a book you have enjoyed. Find out what other books the author has written. Look at one or more "best books" lists. These can be based on year, subject, or even all time. Identify at least one book you would like to read.

Working on the requirements for the Crime Prevention merit badge helps Scouts stay safe in their homes and in the community. Scouts learn to identify and be alert to situations which may lead to crime. They learn about the dangers of substance abuse.

Do the following: (a) Using a safety checklist approved by your counselor, make an inspection of your home. Identify any hazards found and explain how these can be corrected. (b) Review and develop your family's fire prevention plan. Review your family's emergency action plan for fire in your home.
