Minnesota's Wage Theft Law requires employers to give written notice of wage rates and other information to each new hire. The notice must be given in English and must include a statement, in multiple languages, that informs employees that they may request the notice be provided to them in another language.

The act requires that all employers provide each employee with a written notice containing specified information at the time of hire. The notice must be in the language the employer normally uses to communicate employment-related information to the employee.

In June, we reported on a bill passed by the New York State Legislature that proposed significant changes to the state's labor laws. Among other things, the bill eliminated the requirement that employers furnish annual wage notices to employees between January 1 and February 1.

In addition to California, New York, Alaska, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Utah, and West Virginia have enacted similar legislation.

When an employer withholds or deducts earned wages, benefits, or wage supplements, “all employees shall have the right to recover full wages, benefits and wage supplements and liquidated damages.”

An employer must notify employees, at the time of hiring, of the rate of pay and of the time and place of payment. Whenever possible, such notification shall be in writing and shall be acknowledged by both parties.
