Meristematic cells have the ability to divide continuously and help in the growth of plants. After the growth is complete, cells formed by the division of meristematic cells lose their ability to divide and start to perform a specific function. Thus they permanently acquire a specific shape, size and function.

Most cells produced in the root-tip meristem, for example, go through three distinct phases of development—division, growth (elongation), and differentiation. These three steps, which overlap in both space and time, give rise to the characteristic architecture of a root tip.

Yet the whole future of the plant depends upon the activity of its meristems. Growth and morphogenesis, and the control of these processes, are largely localized in the meristems proper and in their ancillary regions of occasional cell division, con- tinuing cell enlargement, and cell differentiation.

Meristem Zones Its main function is to trigger the growth of new cells in young seedlings at the tips of roots and shoots and forming buds.

Axillary meristems (AMs) form in the leaf axils to enable branching. During reproductive growth, the SAM transits into inflorescence meristem (IM). Then, the IM generates the floral meristem (FM), which produces floral organs [2].

Axillary meristems allow the production of secondary growth axes in the shoot systems of plants. As such they make a large contribution to the plastic developmental potential of plants, allowing them to alter their architecture to suit the prevailing environment conditions.

Photosynthesis, respiration and transpiration are the three major functions that drive plant growth and development (Figure 24). All three are essential to a plant's survival. How well a plant is able to regulate these functions greatly affects its ability to compete and reproduce.

There are three primary meristems: the protoderm, which will become the epidermis; the ground meristem, which will form the ground tissues comprising parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma cells; and the procambium, which will become the vascular tissues (xylem and phloem).
