Before merging documents, all the references from each Word document must be exported into one EndNote Library. You can use the export traveling library option to do this. Open your EndNote library that have all the references from each Word document. Remove duplicates if there are any.

You need to access the drop-down menu next to the Object button to see the "Text from File" option. Section breaks are the key to keeping the headers intact when you insert a document. If you use a page break instead, Word will strip the headers from the inserted file.

How to combine Word documents Launch Word and open the document that appears first in the combined file. Select the Insert tab from the top toolbar. Select the small black arrow next to the Object button in the Text section. From the Object drop-down menu, select Text From File.

Go to your second document and at the end insert a continuous page break. Copy your second document's contents (Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C) and paste into the copy of the first document at the end.
