A typical private water distribution system consists of a pump with a motor, and a pressure storage tank (Figure 1). The system also needs a control device, such as a pressure switch, in order to operate.

Private, or individual, water systems are composed of private ground water residential wells, cisterns, and larger private water systems that serve more than one residence. Private ground water wells usually supply water to an individual residence.

Public supply refers to water withdrawn by public and private water suppliers that provide water to at least 25 people or have a minimum of 15 connections. Public-supply water is delivered to users for domestic, commercial, and industrial purposes.

The public water supply is regulated so that the water being served to their customers is safe to drink. A private well is not regulated and as the well owner, it is their responsibility to make sure the water is safe to drink.

The term public water system (PWS) refers to any water system that has 15 or more service connections (hook-ups) or serves 25 or more people. Water systems that serve less than 15 service connections or 25 people are considered private water systems and are not regulated by ADEQ.

What is a private water supply? If you supply water to others for example other domestic premises, renting out holiday accommodation or to commercial premises with employees or food production – this is a private water supply. The supply may serve just one property or several properties through a network of pipes.

Private Water System means a water system that provides piped water to one or two residences, one of which may be a rental residence.

All public water systems are further categorized into three different types: Community (CWS) Non-transient Non-community (NTNCWS) Transient Non-community (TNCWS)
