Long explanation: Most digital watermarks are visible, as they're not intended to be hidden. For example, an image watermark may be overlaid on top of the original image. Another common watermark is as a metadata for file formats that supports metadata attachment.

However, by using softwares, developers can easily decode these watermarks especially if no modifications have been done. Some technologies are even so advanced that even if you crop, transform, recolor, or use a different device to take a picture, they would still be able to track you.

Specialized software or algorithms are utilized to analyze the image and extract the hidden information to detect invisible watermarks. The software decodes and compares the altered pixel values to the watermark data stored in a database or registry.

A watermark is embedded into a digital signal at each point of distribution. If a copy of the work is found later, then the watermark may be retrieved from the copy and the source of the distribution is known. This technique reportedly has been used to detect the source of illegally copied movies.

Understandably, artists have resorted to “watermarking” their images online to prevent others from stealing their work. While watermarking can be a great deterrent, it's not the same thing as a copyright, nor is it a substitute for officially obtaining copyright protection from the US Copyright Office.

Invisible watermarks, also known as steganography (from the greek “stenagos” – covered), or hidden watermarks, are so-called because they're not obvious to anybody who doesn't know they're there. They contain hidden patterns or symbols that convey information to those “in the know”.

If you hold an old letter up to a lamp, you might see a filigree of light (in the shape of a crown, a coat of arms or even a unicorn!) appearing in the paper. These are watermarks – images imprinted in the sheets during paper manufacturing.

Invisible watermarks work by slightly tweaking the values in a photograph's pixels. Depending on its size, photographs will have thousands to millions or even billions of "pixels". Pixels are tiny squares of one color. Each pixel is composed of three "channels" of red, green, and blue.

If you didn't know it, there are two distinctive types of watermarks you can resort to: visible and invisible. Each comes with its share of advantages and disadvantages and each can turn out to be efficient, depending on your purpose and what you're looking to accomplish through its use.
