Empathic concern is the tendency to feel concern or sympathy for those who suffer (Barchard, 2001). The Empathic Concern Scale consists of 10 items, half of which are reverse-coded. It uses a 5-point accuracy scale (1 = Very Inaccurate, 5 = Very Accurate) The complete Empathic Concern scale is included in Appendix A.

The Interpersonal Reactivity Index (Davis, 1980, 1983) is a measure of dispositional empathy that takes as its starting point the notion that empathy consists of a set of separate but related constructs. The instrument contains four seven-item subscales, each tapping a separate facet of empathy.

The Interpersonal Reactivity Index Specifically, the IRI consists of four subscales: perspective taking, empathic concern, personal distress, and fantasy. Taking these in turn, the perspective taking subscale measures an individual's tendency to spontaneously adopt other people's points of view.

The Clinical Interpersonal Reactivity Index has an 18-item, two-factor structure with Cronbach's alpha values of 0.87 and 0.73.

It uses a 7-level Likert scale from “strongly disagree”to “strongly agree” (range, 20-140). It measures 3 dimensions of empathy: perspective-taking (10 items, range, 10-70), compassionate care (8-56) and standing in the patient's shoes (2-14).

The Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) is a standardized self-report measure of disposition to empathic responsiveness for the general adult population (the domain for which it was developed), and for the general adolescent population.
