Borehole logging systems are used to make measurements inside boreholes (or drill holes) with borehole probes containing sensors and instrumentation, which transmit the data via a cable, to recording instruments on the surface.

As a borehole is advanced downward, the driller generally should record the following information in a standard log: Name and address of the drilling company. Driller's name. Job description and number. Number, type and location of boring. Date of boring.
