A protective order is ordered by a judge in criminal court, usually after someone has been arrested. If someone has been arrested for hurting, threatening, or stalking you, the criminal court may give you a protective order to keep that person away from you.

Nothing. There is no cost to file for a restraining order. You do not need a lawyer to file for a restraining order. However, you may wish to have a lawyer, especially if the abuser has a lawyer.

Generally speaking, it is effective for 6 months from the date of the hearing. A victim/applicant can request that the restraining order after the hearing be extended when the 6 months is about to run out. They must file a motion to extend and the respondent must again get notice.
