Shelley calls upon the west wind to be his 'Spirit', to make them both as one: wild, impetuous, undaunted. Like wither'd leaves to quicken a new birth! Ashes and sparks, my words among mankind! The trumpet of a prophecy!

Here Shelley's speaker describes himself as the harp, or "lyre," that the wind will play. He'll be the instrument, and the West Wind will play its own music on him, just as it does in the branches of trees in the forest.

I never hear the west wind but tears are in my eyes. For it comes from the west lands, the old brown hills. The west wind is the harbinger of spring. After the harsh winter, the warm west wind is soothing. It's perception reminds the speaker of the pastoral beauty of his native place, where he longs to return.

In the final line, he refers to himself as one who is in the final stages of his life when he says, “I fall upon the thorns of life! I bleed”. Just like the wind swept away the dead leaves of the Autumn, the speaker calls for the wind to sweep him away, old and decaying as he is.

Answer – The poet admires the wild energy and power of the west wind, and urges it to impart its strength to his own soul. 3. “Drive my dead thoughts over the universe.” Answer – The poet asks the west wind to scatter his thought all over the universe like fallen leaves, so that new ideas and thoughts can be generated.

In the final line, he refers to himself as one who is in the final stages of his life when he says, “I fall upon the thorns of life! I bleed”. Just like the wind swept away the dead leaves of the Autumn, the speaker calls for the wind to sweep him away, old and decaying as he is.

And, in the first section of the poem, the speaker compares the dead leaves the West Wind blows to “ghosts” and “pestilence-stricken multitudes.” The West Wind turns the fall colors into something scary, associated with sickness and death.

Apostrophe, Personification: Throughout the poem, the poet addresses the west wind as if it were a person. Metaphor: Comparison of the west wind to breath of Autumn's being (line 1). Metaphor: Comparison of autumn to a living, breathing creature (line 1). Simile: Comparison of dead leaves to ghosts.
