Whether or not this was Lange's intention, it has been suggested that this quasi-religious imagery appealed to the middle-class audiences that her documentary photographs were intended to influence.

Migrant Mother is a photograph taken in 1936 in Nipomo, California by American photographer Dorothea Lange during her spell at the Resettlement Administration (later the Farm Security Administration).

From the moment it first appeared in the pages of a San Francisco newspaper in March 1936, the image known as “Migrant Mother” came to symbolize the hunger, poverty and hopelessness endured by so many Americans during the Great Depression.

From the moment it first appeared in the pages of a San Francisco newspaper in March 1936, the image known as “Migrant Mother” came to symbolize the hunger, poverty and hopelessness endured by so many Americans during the Great Depression.

These photographs led to her hiring by the federal Farm Security Administration (FSA). Lange closely identified with the FSA's mission, which was to document the effects of the Depression on Americans, bringing attention to their struggles so that such events would never recur.

While touring the country on behalf of the agency, Lange came across a hungry and desperate mother and took several pictures of her, one of which would become known as Migrant Mother. Dorothea Lange believed the camera was an instrument of democracy. She tried to be open-minded and approached her subjects with respect.

Dorothea Lange recounts the story of the “picture that symbolized an era”, in an article entitled “The Assignment I'll Never Forget”, published in Popular Photography magazine, February, 1960. She had been working in the field for a month, photographing migrant farm laborers in California.

Her photographs clearly documented the negative effects of the Depression on Americans, particularly the rural poor and migrant farmworkers. Lange's work was powerful in its effort to portray the personal side of the Depression's misery, as the individual families she worked with humanized the national crisis.
