The Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) is a method of evaluating the impact of fatigue on you. The FSS is a short questionnaire that requires you to rate your level of fatigue. The FSS questionnaire contains nine statements that rate the severity of your fatigue symptoms.

Description. The Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) is one of the most frequently used inventories for measuring fatigue in people with chronic illnesses. The original FSS is a nine-item unidimensional questionnaire developed by Krupp, LaRocca, Muir-Nash, and Steinberg (1989) (Table 1).

The top three most commonly used include the fatigue severity scale (FSS), Chalder fatigue scale (CFS), and fatigue impact scale (FIS). The FSS is a self-report scale assessing the impact of fatigue on functioning in fatigued subjects: higher scores on the FSS indicate greater fatigue.

An example of a well known fatigue/function measure is the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) (Krupp, LaRocca, Muir-Nash, & Steinberg, 1989). The FSS is composed of nine items, and in the initial validation study, internal consistency was high for specific illness groups (MS and lupus) and healthy controls.

There are no medical tests to measure fatigue. But a good way to describe fatigue is on a scale of 1 to 10. Where 1 means you don't feel tired at all and 10 means the worst tiredness you can imagine. Some may use a questionnaire to help them work out how it's affecting you.
