Get Social Security Representative Payee

The most important duty of a representative payee is to know your needs and to use the benefits in your best interests. Your representative payee must first use your Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for your current basic needs for food, clothing, housing, medical care and personal comfort items.

§ 416.622 Who may not serve as a representative payee? A representative payee applicant may not serve if he/she: (a) Has been convicted of a violation under section 208, 811 or 1632 of the Social Security Act. (b) Has been convicted of an offense resulting in imprisonment for more than 1 year.

To be your own payee, you need to show Social Security that you are physically and mentally able to manage your money. Proof includes: A note from your doctor or psychologist stating that you should be able to manage your own money.

You must complete form SSA-11 (Request to be selected as payee) and show us documents to prove your identity. You will need to provide your social security number, or if you represent an organization, the organization's employer identification number.

Social Security's Representative Payment Program provides benefit payment management for our beneficiaries who are incapable of managing their Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments. We appoint a suitable representative payee (payee) who manages the payments on behalf of the beneficiaries.
