The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act repealed all unreimbursed employee expenses. As of tax year 2018, unreimbursed employee business expenses can no longer be claimed for a tax deduction.

In 2018, The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act eliminated the deduction for unreimbursed employee expenses. Before 2018, employees who incurred job-related expenses, such as travel expenses and job-specific expenses, were able to deduct itemized deductions on their federal tax returns.

PA follows the federal tax rules regarding claiming a home office, with three exceptions. First, PA does not allow the use of the IRS simplified method. If a taxpayer desires to claim a home office deduction for PA tax reporting purposes, the taxpayer must compute the deduction using actual expenses.

However, if the taxpayer is self-employed and pays union dues, those dues are deductible as a business expense. Also, even though unreimbursed employee expenses are no longer deductible on the federal return, some states, such as Minnesota and Pennsylvania, may allow the deduction on the state tax return.

The vast majority of W-2 workers can't deduct unreimbursed employee expenses in 2020. The Tax Cut and Jobs Act (TCJA) eliminated unreimbursed employee expense deductions for all but a handful of protected groups.

Moving expenses are not allowed when moving out of PA, nor are they allowed for non-residents. 10. Reimbursements received that are not on a W-2 must be deducted from expenses claimed on the PA Schedule UE.

However, with tax reform, all miscellaneous 2% expenses, including unreimbursed employee expenses are not allowed between 2018 and 2025. Expenses such as union dues, work-related business travel, or professional organization dues are no longer deductible, even if the employee can itemize deductions.

You can deduct business-related travel expenses, office supplies and equipment, and health insurance premiums from your self-employment income, just to name a few potential deductions. And don't forget about the special retirement accounts for the self-employed that we covered earlier.
