DAYTIME DRIVING (5 AM to 9 PM) If you have a junior learner permit, you may drive in upstate New York between the hours of 5 AM and 9 PM only under the direct supervision of a person who is at least age 21 and has a license valid for the vehicle you are driving.

Junior licenses still have restricted driving hours of 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. with an exception if the driver is working or attending a school function. After 9 p.m., the driver can drive from work or school and directly home.

With a Class D license, a 17 year old may drive unrestricted anywhere in New York State.
