If you predecease your spouse and you elected to provide her with the maximum CSRS survivor annuity, she will receive the full benefit in addition to her own earned Social Security retirement benefit.

If your spouse is not receiving any retirement benefits yet, then you could technically take your regular Social Security benefit as early as age 62. When your spouse files for their benefit later you could switch to spousal benefits.

You may be entitled to monthly benefits retroactively for months before the month you filed an application for benefits. For example, full retirement age claims and survivor claims may be paid for up to six months retroactively. In certain cases, benefits involving disability up to 12 months may be paid retroactively.

Surviving spouse, full retirement age or older—100% of your benefit amount. Surviving spouse, age 60 to full retirement age—71½ to 99% of your basic amount. A child under age 18 (19 if still in elementary or secondary school) or has a disability—75%.

If you already receive benefits as a spouse, your benefit will automatically convert to survivors benefits after we receive the report of death.

If you qualify for your own retirement and spouse's benefits, we will always pay your own benefits first. If your benefit amount as a spouse is higher than your own retirement benefit, you will get a combination of the two benefits that equals the higher amount.

A one-time lump-sum death payment of $255 can be paid to the surviving spouse if they were living with the deceased. If living apart and they were receiving certain Social Security benefits on the deceased's record, they may be eligible for the lump-sum death payment.

If you're already getting Social Security benefits We'll check to see if you can get more money as a surviving spouse. If so, you'll get a combination of benefits that equals the higher amount. You must complete an application to switch to survivors benefits. We also need to see your spouse's death certificate.
