A complete nomination file consists of the following items: Completed, signed application. Materials from all high schools or colleges attended – transcript(s) and standardized test scores. Resume. Essay responding to prompt on application. Three recommendation letters from individuals who know you personally.

The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment. These institutions prepare college-age Americans to be officers of the U.S. uniformed services.

Before you can be considered for appointment to the United States Air Force Academy, you must obtain a nomination. This is a competitive process, and you should seek a nomination in each of the categories for which you are eligible.

Congressional nominations are due in the Nominations and Appointments by January 31 of the year of Admission to the Academy. Apply to: Submit your letter of application to both of your U.S. Senators and to the representative from your home congressional district. It is not necessary to know the official personally.
