Grading limits and maximum aggregate size are specified because these properties affect the amount of aggregate used as well as cement and water requirements, workability, pumpability, and durability of concrete.

In a gradation and size analysis, a sample of dry aggregate of known weight is separated through a series of sieves with progressively smaller openings. Once separated, the weight of particles retained on each sieve is measured (Figure 2) and compared to the total sample weight.

The usual range employed is between 9.5mm and 37.5mm in diameter. - Fine aggregates are usually sand or crushed stone that are less than 9.55mm in diameter. Typically the most common size of aggregate used in construction is 20mm. A larger size, 40mm, is more common in mass concrete.

The grading or size distribution of aggregate is an important characteristic because it determines the paste requirement for workable concrete. ... The more these voids are filled, the less workable the concrete becomes, therefore, a compromise between workability and economy is necessary.

Determine the theoretical combined gradation from the individual gradations. This is done by multiplying the percent retained on each sieve for the individual gradations by the relative portion of the aggregate volumes. Then total the percent retained of each product for each sieve size.

The tensile strength of the concrete is severely affected by increasing the size of the aggregate. On increasing the maximum grain size to 120 180 mm, the reduction in tensile strength is 30 50% as compared with concretes with maximum aggregate size 20 mm. There is also a reduction in the elongation limit.

The Different Types Of Aggregate. The categories of aggregates include gravel, sand, recycled concrete, slag, topsoil, ballast, Type 1 MOT, and geosynthetic aggregates (synthetic products commonly used in civil engineering projects used to stabilise terrain).

Combined fine and coarse aggregates grading is specified to ensure that a satisfactory amount of aggregate with a minimum amount of void spaces is obtained. This will enable the use of a minimum amount of paste (water and cementitious material) in concrete, improving the dimensional stability and the durability.

A mixture of fine and coarse aggregate for a concrete.
