The Army Body Composition Program (ABCP) is a United States Army program that dictates height and weight standards for all Active Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve Soldiers; the ABCP is covered in Army Regulation (AR) 600-9.

This handout provides general information concerning Chapter 16, AR 135-178, Failure to Meet Army Body Composition Standards. AR 135-178 contains more specific information. If you have additional questions, please consult with a Trial Defense Service (TDS) attorney.

Summary of Army Body Composition Program-Related Actions, Counseling, and Evaluations to remain in the Soldier's record for 36 months. To ensure Service Members successfully maintain body fat standards, remaining enrolled in ABCP until reaching under 2% maximum body fat for 2 consecutive months is highly recommended.

(b) When using height-weight screening tables, the upper weight limits for allowable weight will not be more than 27.5 BMI and the lower limit will not be less than 25. The minimal allowable weight will not be lower than a corresponding BMI of 19.

The focus of the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP) is to have an effective, accurate assessment of the holistic health and fitness of our Force while providing Soldiers with the resources they need to improve and preserve individual and unit readiness.

If you do not meet the ABCP body fat standard at the 90-day point you are considered a ABCP failure. The commander will initiate separation action, bar to reenlistment, or transfer to the IRR per paragraph 3-12d for all Soldiers who fail to meet the body fat standard at the 90-day point.
