Non-cash items are furniture, clothing, home appliances, sporting goods, artwork and any item you contribute other than cash, checks, or by credit card. Generally, you can deduct your cash contributions and the Fair Market Value (FMV) of most property you donate to a qualified charitable organization.

Be aware of the annual deduction limits for donations to public charities, including donor-advised funds. For contributions of non-cash assets held more than one year, the limit is 30% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). Your deduction limit will be 60% of your AGI for cash gifts.

You must file one or more Forms 8283 if the amount of your deduction for each noncash contribution is more than $500. You must also file Form 8283 if you have a group of similar items for which a total deduction of over $500 is claimed. See Similar Items of Property, later.

Generally, you can only deduct charitable contributions if you itemize deductions on Schedule A (Form 1040), Itemized Deductions. Gifts to individuals are not deductible.

More In Forms and Instructions Individuals, partnerships, and corporations file Form 8283 to report information about noncash charitable contributions when the amount of their deduction for all noncash gifts is more than $500.

If you donate non-cash items, you can claim the fair market value of the items on your taxes. If you donated a vehicle, your deduction depends on if the organization keeps the car or sells it at an auction.

If the amount of the noncash donation is greater than $500, the IRS requires you to include Form 8283 with your tax return. If the amount of the noncash donation is more than $5,000, you will also need a qualified appraisal of the noncash property.
