In fact, if your little one has had some of a bottle but doesn't want the rest, you should dump it within an hour. Don't put it in the fridge for later use. Milk-based products are notorious for growing bacteria. Once your baby has drunk from a bottle, bacteria is introduced and the formula shouldn't be saved.

(A bottle of formula—alone or mixed with breast milk—is officially safe to keep in the fridge for 24 hours, versus breast milk alone, which can be refrigerated for up to four days, ing to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

REMEMBER: After feeding baby, toss out any milk left in the bottle within 1 hour. Fresh breast milk stored in the fridge is good for 4 days, but DON'T freeze it if you don't use it in that time frame. Toss it out. If you don't think you will use freshly expressed milk within 4 days, freeze it right after pumping.

This is safe to do but it may make breastfeeding more challenging in the early weeks if your baby is also bottle fed.

Use prepared formula within two hours of mixing and within one hour of starting your baby's feeding. Once you've fed your baby their formula, make sure to discard any formula left over in the bottle. It's no longer safe to be consumed since it's been contaminated with your baby's saliva and can grow unsafe bacteria.

Once a bottle is prepared or taken from the fridge for feeding, use the formula within 1 hour or throw it out. You cannot re-refrigerate formula once it has been warmed or reaches room temperature. The reason experts recommend you throw away unused formula is because bacteria can begin to grow.

It can take several weeks for you and your baby to feel happy and confident with breastfeeding. Once you've both got the hang of it, it's usually possible to offer your baby bottles of expressed milk or formula alongside breastfeeding. This is sometimes called mixed or combination feeding.

It's fine to give your baby room temperature or even cold formula. If your baby prefers warm formula, place a filled bottle in a bowl of warm water or run under warm water. Test the temperature by putting a couple of drops on the back of your hand or wrist. The formula should feel lukewarm — not hot.

Baby formula doesn't have to be warm. It's fine to feed your baby cool or even cold formula. It's all up to your baby's preference – they may prefer it warm, at room temperature, or even chilled, and all of those options are just fine.

Formula mixed with breast milk can be safely refrigerated for up to 24 hours. At room temperature, use it within two hours.
