Emissions inspections for gasoline-powered vehicles model year 1982 and newer cost $25. Emissions tests for gasoline-powered vehicles model year 1981 and older cost $15 and are required every year. Which vehicles are exempt from an emissions inspection? Gasoline vehicles are exempt from an emissions test for the first full seven model years. Diesel vehicles are exempt from an emissions test for first full four model years.

The three most recent model year vehicles and those that are 25 model years or older are exempt from emissions testing, as well as all motorcycles, recreational vehicles (RVs), motor homes and diesel-powered vehicles.

Vehicles model years 1975 and olderVehicles model years 1975-and-older can be registered as "collector's items" with no emissions inspection requirement or mileage restriction. However, if the vehicle is not specifically registered as a "collector's item," an emissions inspection is required every year.

Most diesel- and gas-powered cars and trucks manufactured in 1968 or later must have an annual emissions test, which can be completed at most service stations. New vehicles, motorcycles, and vehicles with a model year of 1967 and older are exempt from this requirement.

If you have a vehicle that is older than seven model years and from 1982 or newer, you must receive an emissions test once every two years. Vehicles from model year 1981 and older need annual inspections.
