The USDA organic seal is an official mark protected by federal regulation and overseen by the National Organic Program (NOP), a program in the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS). Certified farms and businesses are authorized to use the seal to identify their products as organic.

The USDA Symbol (also sometimes referred to as a logo) was created and approved for use by the Secretary in 1996. It stands for all of USDA's activities in its mission areas and agencies. The Symbol is a graphic representation of the foundation of all agriculture, the soil.

The USDA symbol can be produced in one or two colors. The official colors for the USDA symbol are dark blue (PMS 288) and dark green (PMS 343).

"USDA Symbols or logos are intended for the official use of the United States Department of Agriculture only. They are expressly excluded from use to imply endorsement of a commercial product or service. The symbol or logo may not be used by anyone outside of USDA without permission."

Organic certification means that farmers and businesses have met strict standards for the growing, processing and handling of their products. If you see the USDA organic seal, the product is certified organic and has 95 percent or more organic content. Organic production emphasizes natural processes and ingredients.
