Filing a Petition for Adoption involves a filing fee of $120 to the Clerk of Court's Office. Attached to the petition are a number of legal documents that are highly case specific.

There is no set time frame as the process is child focused. Once a child is placed in your home for adoption the process of finalizing the adoption typically takes six months or longer.

For one thing, if the child to be adopted is over the age of 12, the child himself must consent. And in addition to the mother, “any man who may or may not be the biological father” must be identified and give consent as well.

A big factor in whether or not you qualify to adopt a child is if you have a criminal background. No matter which adoption agency you work with, all adoptive parents must complete a home study, which includes background checks.

Who can be adopted? A child or adult can be adopted. But, spouses may not adopt each other. An adult adoptee must consent to the adoption.

For domestic adoption through a private agency, the costs can be anywhere from $20,000 to over $40,000. For international adoption, the costs become even greater. Costs range from $35,000 to $45,000 and can exceed this range depending on the child's birthplace.

In North Carolina a single person or married couple can be an adoptive family. You must be 18-years-old to adopt and 21-years-old to foster. You do not have to own a home or have a certain amount of income to be a foster or adoptive parent.

When working with an agency, you can expect fees to range from $20,000 to $40,000. Many agencies have an income-based sliding scale that they use to determine fees per family. Should you choose to work with an adoption lawyer, the fees will “vary by state, experience, and time frame.
