How Often Can TSTs Be Repeated? In general, there is no risk associated with repeated tuberculin skin test placements. If a person does not return within 48-72 hours for a tuberculin skin test reading, a second test can be placed as soon as possible.

A repeat TB test (e.g., TB blood test or a TB skin test) is not required. Annual TB testing of health care personnel is not recommended unless there is a known exposure or ongoing transmission at a healthcare facility. Health care personnel with untreated latent TB infection should receive an annual TB symptom screen.

Employees who initially test negative for TB infection are required to repeat a TB exam at least once every 4 years. Once the employee has the physician certification that they are free of active TB, there is no further requirement for repeat X-ray of the lungs every 4 years.

Baseline two-step Tuberculin Skin Test (TST) or a single Blood Assay for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (BAMT): All staff (within three (3) months prior to contact with residents) unless there is a documented TST or a BAMT result during the previous twelve (12) months.

MinuteClinic® offers convenient, walk in TB testing for those required to have it for their work, or persons at increased risk of becoming infected. Your MinuteClinic provider will review your medical history, apply the tuberculin skin test and arrange your follow-up visit for assessment of the results.

In a healthy person whose immune system is normal, induration greater than or equal to 15 mm is considered a positive skin test. If blisters are present (vesiculation), the test is also considered positive. In some groups of people, the test is considered positive if induration less than 15 mm is present.

The TB skin test is performed by injecting a small amount of fluid (called tuberculin) into the skin on the lower part of the arm. A person given the tuberculin skin test must return within 48 to 72 hours to have a trained health care worker look for a reaction on the arm.

If you have a negative skin test, you need a repeat test at least once every four years. If you have a documented positive skin test, you must have an initial chest X-ray. After that, you still need to be screened every four years.
