Addiction Severity Index (ASI) is an assessment tool widely used in the evaluation of substance abuse treatment. This tool serves as a guidance instrument in treatment planning. This instrument is an interview process that assesses history, frequency, and consequences of alcohol and drug use.

The ASI is an assessment tool used by psychologists, psychiatrists, and therapists to gauge the severity of a person's substance abuse and provides a comprehensive overview of a person's addiction-related issues.

The ASI covers seven (7) important areas of a patient's life: medical, employment / support, drug and alcohol use, legal, family / social, and psychiatric. The instrument is designed to obtain lifetime information about problem behaviors as well as focusing specifically on the 30 days prior to assessment.

The ASI can be used effectively to explore problems within any adult group of individuals who report substance abuse as their major problem. It has been used with psychiatrically ill, homeless, pregnant, and prisoner populations, but its major use has been with adults seeking treatment for substance abuse problems.

Test-retest reliability found the ASI to have moderate to high reliability coefficients in each of the seven domains assessed. Both composite score and severity rating measures were found to be quite independent with low intercorrelations.

The ASI covers seven (7) important areas of a patient's life: medical, employment / support, drug and alcohol use, legal, family / social, and psychiatric. The instrument is designed to obtain lifetime information about problem behaviors as well as focusing specifically on the 30 days prior to assessment.
