Records are housed at the Virginia Department of Health State Office and in the county where the death occurred.

West Virginia is not an “open record” state. This means that not just anyone can have access to the information contained in vital records. In fact, you'll face restrictions on access to certified copies of birth, death, and related certificates.

You can search most state archives online and easily access them from the comfort of your own home. These searches are also free. State archives often have death certificates that date to the founding of their state and beyond in some cases.

Information for obtaining a Death Certificate directly from the Virginia Department Health Vital Records Division can be found at: .vdh.virginia.gov by clicking on “Births, Deaths & Marriages” or by calling one of their customer service representatives at 804-662-6200.

Death Event: Death. Cost of copy: $12.00. Address: Vital Registration Office. Room 165. 350 Capitol Street. Charleston, WV 25301-3701. Remarks: State office has records since January 1917. For earlier records, write to Clerk of County Court in county where event occurred.

Death, marriage, and divorce records become public information 25 years after the event. Vital records are available to immediate family members only: mother, father, spouse, child, brother, sister, and grandparents with valid identification.

The Verification of Death includes: Name of the deceased. Date of death. Place of death.

Upon completion, it is transferred to the county vital statistics office where the certified copies are processed. On average this usually takes 10-12 days (sometimes up to 6 weeks when there has been an investigation, autopsy, or a delay when the medical examiner is signing).
