How 9-Team Tournament Brackets Work. The usual 9-team brackets will have four rounds of games that comes down to single champion. In order to make the tournament move smoothly, there's one play-in game. The lowest seed will have a play-in game and the winner will end up playing the top #1 seed.

For example, if there are 9 participants/teams, the next higher power on 2 is 16, so 16-9=7, which is the number of byes (7) that are needed in the first round of a nine participant/team single elimination tournament.

The single-elimination format enables a relatively large number of competitors to participate. There are no "dead" matches (perhaps excluding "classification" matches), and no matches where one competitor has more to play for than the other. The format is less suited to games where draws are frequent.

A single-elimination, knockout, or sudden death tournament is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of each match-up is immediately eliminated from the tournament. Each winner will play another in the next round, until the final match-up, whose winner becomes the tournament champion.

Double elimination is a tournament style where opponents are eliminated after losing two matches, rather than one match. A few examples of double elimination brackets in gaming events include: Apex Legends Global Series Playoffs. Overwatch League Playoffs.

The double-elimination format has some advantages over the single-elimination format, most notably the fact that third and fourth places can be determined without the use of a consolation or "classification" match involving two contestants who have already been eliminated from winning the championship.

Option One - Nine Team Round-Robin: This is a great format if you have the time for five rounds per day. (And, if you are in daylight savings time, this should be no problem). Each team plays four games per day, with one bye per day.

(A) Single Elimination Tournament To determine the number of matches, subtract one from the total number of participants. For example if you have 8 participants/teams taking part, simply 8-1=7, therefore there will be 7 total matches to determine a champion.
