smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. On levels without bedrooms, alarms in the living room (or den or family room) or near the stairway to the upper level, or in both locations.

Section 13.7. 1.8 of the Fire Code contains general installation criteria for smoke alarms including requirements for the interconnection of smoke alarms in new construction and more specific requirements for where smoke alarms should be installed.

Smoke alarm manufacturers require all interconnected devices to be powered from the same branch circuit. Section 210.12(B) of 2002 National Electrical Code (NEC) now requires the entire branch circuit supplying outlets in a dwelling unit bedroom to be protected by an arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) device.

For many years NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, has required as a minimum that smoke alarms be installed inside every sleep room (even for existing homes) in addition to requiring them outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. (Additional smoke alarms are required for larger homes.)

smoke alarms inside each bedroom (sleep room), outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. On levels without bedrooms, alarms in the living room (or den or family room) or near the stairway to the upper level, or in both locations.

It is the basics (when a system is required, installation criteria, equipment provisions, etc.) NFPA 72 should also be consulted for full details regarding inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire alarm systems. Chapter 14 of NFPA 72 will provide the detailed requirements for ITM.

Remember, single-station 120-volt smoke alarms are covered by NEC Article 210. These smoke alarms are subject to the requirements for AFCI protection, whereas the low-voltage fire alarms covered by NEC Article 760 are not.

Because alarm sensors wear out, replace each alarm at least every 10 years. Also, alarms have labels showing when they were made. If you don't see a label, the alarm is old and must be replaced.
