Footnotes should be numbered consecutively in the order they appear throughout your paper. Each note should have a unique number; don't use the same number again even if you cite the same source repeatedly. Footnote numbers are usually placed at the end of the relevant clause or sentence.

In the Review pane, in Tracking select Simple Markup. The footnote numbering will still be out of sequence (due to a deleted reference). Now, in Changes, select Accept > Accept All Changes and Stop Tracking. The numbering will now be in sequence!

Footnotes have to be manually renumbered when there are section breaks in a chapter. To do that, you find the first footnote you need to renumber, select it, go to insert footnote, and in the custom mark box, insert the number you want. Then click apply.

In most cases, word limits for essays include footnotes and bibliographies. Notes should be numbered sequentially (1,2,3 etc). Do not use the same number more than once in a series, even if you are referring to exactly the same passage in the same text which you have already referenced.

In your document, click where you want to insert the note reference mark. On the Insert menu, click Footnote. Under Location, click Footnotes or Endnotes, and then on the Footnotes or Endnotes pop-up menu, click the location that you want. Under Format, select the numbering options that you want, and then click Insert.

To change the formatting of the footnote numbers, select the Footnotes Reference Style. If you want to change the formatting of the footnote text at the bottom of the page, select the Footnote Text Style. Click Modify, and then change the formatting options (font, size, and so on).

You can further personalise your footnotes by clicking on the corner arrow in the Footnotes section of the References tab. Here, you can choose whether to display footnotes at the bottom of the page or under the text and whether you want them arranged in columns.
