Lawmakers enacted SB 343 (Allen, Chapter 507, Statues of 2021), which prohibits use of the chasing arrows or any other indicator of recyclability on products and packaging unless certain criteria are met. Increasing recycling in California first requires accurate labels on recyclables.

The new law will require that all plastic bottles covered by the state's container redemption program contain a specified average amount of post-consumer recycled plastic content. As of January 1, 2022 plastic beverage bottles on sale in California must contain, on average, at least 15% recycled plastic.

Among its provisions, the law requires certain types of packaging in the state to be recyclable or compostable by 2032. It cuts plastic packaging by 25 percent in 10 years and requires 65 percent of all single-use plastic packaging to be recycled in the same timeframe.

The law requires a postconsumer plastic recycled content standard of 15 percent beginning January 1, 2022, increasing to 25 percent on 2025 and 50 percent on 2030.
