There are 4 steps in digital radiography: image generation, processing, archiving, and presentation.

The chest x-ray is the most commonly performed diagnostic x-ray examination. A chest x-ray produces images of the heart, lungs, airways, blood vessels and the bones of the spine and chest.

The steps in a typical radiology workflow include: Scheduling and preparation. Image acquisition. Image and data interpretation. Outcomes & follow-up care. Shared decision making, pathway selection & treatment. Reporting & results communication.

AERB enforces regulatory requirements to ensure safe operation of X-ray equipment such as Cath Lab equipment, Computed Tomography machines, C-Arm, Mammography machines, General purpose medical radiography machines etc.

The design layout should be spacious for setting up an easy workflow. The wall thickness should be at the level of the shielding standards defined. The doors must be sliding and wide for the easy movement of the patients. The windows are avoided to reduce the penetration of radiation in the surrounding area.

During a radiographic procedure, an x-ray beam is passed through the body. A portion of the x-rays are absorbed or scattered by the internal structure and the remaining x-ray pattern is transmitted to a detector so that an image may be recorded for later evaluation.

The process involves generating an X-ray beam, passage of X-ray photons through a patient's biological tissues, and interaction of exiting photons with an image receptor to generate a film-screen or digital system radiograph.

X-Ray rooms should preferably be sited on the ground floor of a building. ii. If the X-Ray room is above ground level the solid concrete slab of density 2.35 g/cm3 must be of 150 mm thickness. Thickness of ceiling slabs, if space above is occupied, should not be less than 100 mm.
