Someone with 20/20 vision doesn't have razor-sharp vision, but sees things at 20 feet that most people who don't need vision correction see at 20 feet. Hence the vision of 20/20. A person with 20/40 vision sees things at 20 feet that most people who don't need vision correction can see at 40 feet.

The third line is equivalent to 20/40, it is the driver's test line.

When you get a prescription for 20/40 vision, it means that you must be 20 feet from things that people with 20/20 vision can see clearly at 40 feet. In other words, your doctor may prescribe eyewear, such as contacts or glasses, to correct your vision.

The DMV's vision screening standard is the ability to see 20/40 with both eyes together, with or without corrective lenses. Drivers who fail the vision screening are referred to a vision specialist who must examine the driver and complete a Report of Vision Examination (DL 62) form.

Vision Referral You will be given a Report of Vision Examination (DL 62) form for your eye doctor to complete and sign. When you return to the DMV with the DL 62 form, your vision will be retested. You will also have to take a driving test to demonstrate that you can drive safely, even though your vision is impaired.

The minimum requirement for visual acuity is 20/40 acuity with or without corrective lenses. Drivers with acuity between 20/41 and 20/70 are limited to daylight driving only. You must have at least 140 degree peripheral vision (the ability to see to the side) to have a license without restrictions.

Everyone must have his or her vision screened when applying for a renewal, with the exception of Safe Driver Renewals. All persons age 75 or older must take a driving test at each renewal. Drivers age 81-86 must have their licenses renewed every two years, while persons age 87 and older must renew annually.

If you only have vision in one eye, you can still drive a noncommercial vehicle in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
