The Magistrate or Judge of the Court will request that a Pre-Sentence Report be ordered for more serious matters where a plea of guilty has been entered or where the defendant has pleaded not guilty but has been found guilty after a defended hearing.

These reports are completed by United States Probation Officers. Rule 32 of The Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure require a probation officer to conduct a presentence investigation report for the court in almost every case.

The presentence investigation report has been called the most important document in the Federal criminal process. While its main purpose is to help the court in determining an appropriate sentence, it has continuing importance in decisionmaking after the conviction.

The court asks for a Pre-Sentence Report when it wants to know and understand more about you, so it can decide what sentence would be most appropriate --- given the crime you have committed. This will be after you have pleaded guilty or been convicted after a trial, and will delay the sentencing.

The pre-sentence report includes a statement about what happened, the defendant's personal history and criminal record and a Victim Impact Statement. The report makes recommendations for sentencing.

A pre-sentence report is a report prepared by a probation officer after you have been convicted of a crime. This report contains contextual, historical and personal information about you that assists the judge in determining an appropriate sentence.

Before imposing such a sentence, the Court must obtain a pre-sentence report. Pre-sentence reports are written in the case of adults by the probation service based on an interview and analysis of the offender and his offending history and needs.

The presentence report helps the Court fashion appropriate and fair sentences and is used by probation officers later assigned to supervise the offender.
